Dark Energy Wave: Crunchy begins a journey across the United States, with the final goal of reaching Toronto to contact her parents. Insidiously, The Meddler will not allow her to travel quickly. She finds that hitchhiking is her only option. As she travels from coast to coast, she encounters many random super powered beings. Crunchy is not eager to do battle with them, but her hand is often forced in the matter.
Dark Energy Wave: Carl was first part of the group of people left behind during the mysterious mass exodus to Panderosa, New Mexico. He was an every-day, university dropout with all sorts of potential and no realization. He worked in a video rental store in an era of online media piracy. He was then looked to as a leader of that rejected group. When the dark energy surge transformed the powered beings, Carl continued to build his army. They moved out of Chicago and into the Allegheny National Forest of Pennsylvania. He now organizes about 1000 individuals into a working army. Their goal is to make it over to Egypt to dethrone Bill Ides. Carl is the main protagonist of the story. He is part of those not invited on the mysterious exodus and becomes the leader of that group of rejects, but he is also able to resist Bill's influence along with the rest of his gang. He starts to lead all other humans who can resist Bill. The first goal is to reach NYC and then take off from there for Egypt.
Dark Energy Wave: Sir Real introduces himself through some dialogue with the main villains of the story like Bill Ides and Ginman. He will come to the aid of Crunchy in one particular battle. Due to his awesome power, he can sort of appear anywhere at any time, but his motives remain a total mystery.
Dark Energy Wave: When the exodus occurred most house pets were left behind to die. Carl found Mr Baird in the front yard of a house in a Chicago residential neighborhood. The name tag provided contact info. The person to contact was 'Mr Baird'. That became the dog's name and the dog became Carl's. He was a normal, 40 lb Finnish Lapphund until the dark energy surge. At that point, he transformed into his beast form and became a powerful telepathic mind. Carl and other members of The Root are not aware of this mental ability. Mr Baird uses his apparition form to haunt Bill Ides in his sleep. Bill believes that Mr Baird is a mute man and powerful general in The Root. He is not aware of the reality that Mr Baird is a dog. Mr Baird keeps it that way on purpose. His ultimate goal is to help the rebels free all humans from super powered villainy and tyranny.
Dark Energy Wave: Adam upon being transformed was then immediately mentally enslaved by The Hideous Twist. He was not aware that he had powers while in Toronto. Bill sees Adam as a prodigal son and Bill threatened a personal war against Hideous Twist if the Twist would not release Adam from his prison city. Adam was released and helped out of Toronto through a series of events. He met with the Trumps, a team of powered villains, in Buffalo. They traveled together and he discovered his latent powers. They continued on toward NYC. While on the way, they ran into Crunchy and The Root. Adam made a horrible mistake and unleashed his power with seemingly tragic consequences.
Dark Energy Wave: Skank is busy writing more of her bizarre diary when Crunchy breaks into the Meat Market, the headquarters of the Host. It seems that Skank has sent out many of her members to gather information about the goings-on of super powered beings. She already knows about Crunchy and is willing to offer her membership in The Host. The offer is rejected and a battle ensues.
The Hideous Twist
Dark Energy Wave: During the moment of his transformation, The Hideous Twist took over the minds of everyone in his home town, Toronto. He committed a genocide by having millions of people commit suicide through his powerful telepathy. With the survivors, he changed how they see the world. They believe that there was a nuclear war and massive fallout worldwide as well as a disease that ravaged the survivors... a disease that is kept out of the city. No one is allowed to leave Toronto unless they can buy their way out. The city is organized through criminal organizations. Hideous Twist focuses on a prison city that he has built. He runs Toronto with an iron fist and the prison city with a steel gavel. Bill Ides sensed Adam Allfather in Toronto and demanded his release from The Hideous Twist. The Twist complied and Adam was let out of the prison barracks. Adam received help in the city and eventually bought his way out. The Hideous Twist knocked down the CN Tower and took its place. He watches over the city at all times.
Dark Energy Wave: Hemi (also known as Hemroid by his friends) was in a shopping mall when he was transformed. Ikon had taken mental hold of NYC right away and no one would help Hemi when he called out. In effect, he was a huge heavy head. Migs was also in the mall and while no one would help him either, they found each other. Hemi helped Migs see and Migs carried Hemi out of the mall. They eventually found 001, who used his power to help them. 001 built cybernetic limbs for Hemi and glasses for Migs. They now co-lead Powerhouse, a super hero squad.
Dark Energy Wave: When transformed, Bill found the pain so agonizing that he gouged out his own blind eyes. He can now "see" in a manner of speaking, but, the price of his powers has been great relative to his own sanity. Bill Ides is in Egypt and moves into the unearthed palace where the dark energy wave was released. He uses the locals as an army and slave force. He mentally contacts all powered beings, or what he dubs, "richers", in order to set up alliances for his new world order. His power is managed through going to a special "time lapse" dimension.
Dark Energy Wave: Flo is one of the arch-villains of the story. She is eager for control and has allied herself with a powerful telepath known as Ikon. This keeps a protective bubble for her in NYC, especially from the prying eyes of Bill Ides. She has made an alliance with Skank and The Host in Chicago. Her ultimate goal is to rule the world, but, she is missing many of the pieces necessary to accomplish her goals. She finds it hard to compel others to follow her. Most of her core team have a natural affinity to her due to their powers, and the rest tend to turn traitor. People respect the power, but not the woman.
Dark Energy Wave: Ginman leads his cult followers to Stonehenge every day. His cult's inner circle, the Uprising, must battle a team of anti-heroes called The Fallen and a team of heroes led by Lochness that are called The Cart Horde. At the same time, Ginman has to fend off the control of the Array of Evil. The U.K. is a hub of major activity. Bill and Ginman are close associates and it seems that they are willing to coordinate their actions for a time in order to maintain a balance of power. Ginman is particularly frustrated with Evolucia and her rule of Atlantis, as well as, him being nervous about Sir Real's continuous interference with the spread of Ginman's cult.
Dark Energy Wave: Scoobird was already at the unearthed palace in southern Egypt when Bill Ides arrived. Bill believes Scoobird to be an actual bird that spends time on the ledge of the window in his main chamber. Scoobird uses the opportunity to stay safe and play devil's advocate for some of Bill's nefarious plans. Scoobird could use his pyro power to kill Bill at any time, yet, is unconvinced that it is the right move. Bill appears to believe that no animal has consciousness except for Scoobird and he values the presence of the bird as a special gift from those that set up the dark energy surge. Scoobird uses his telepathy to shield the reality from Bill and to use some of the slave labor to serve him, specifically. Later, he will be discovered and will leave Bill's side. He will join forces with the powerful, Buzzkill.
Dark Energy Wave: Elle has been with Carl from the beginning. They were in Chicago together when the exodus occurred. They were both able to resist the mental influence of Bill Ides. Elle has been dedicated to the cause of The Root and she is a survivor.
Dark Energy Wave: The Meddler lives up to his name by meddling in the affairs of almost all powered beings. He resurrected Wasteoid after he was murdered by Papa Z. Later, he resurrects all of the Root. He seems most interested in the Root. He is interested in challenging them and even manipulating them to create internal strife and insubordination from within their ranks.
Dark Energy Wave: When she was transformed, Evolucia was enjoying retirement with her father, relaxing on the Spanish beaches. They were both transformed and she began a process of getting younger, but, it slowed down over time. Her father was not as lucky. He got younger and younger and de-evolved into other states of animal being. It happened very quickly until he was a 'fish-baby'. When Lucia went to pick him up as a baby, his body collapsed and fell out of a hard shell. All that was left was the shell and a pile of guts. The guts frothed in the Sun and Manatee was born out of them. He slipped into the sea and disappeared. Evolucia moved to the Greek Islands with a group of super powered beings. She raised a section of the Meditteranean Sea and unearthed an ancient city. One of her allies, Scribe, used his power to rebuild the city and make it a modern architectural marvel. Evolucia is leader of this city called Atlantis. All cooperative super powered beings are welcome and it is a haven for them. Bill Ides and Ginman find the idea offensive and exclusive, if not elitist. Evolucia is powerful and a great leader and she cares little for their arrogant sentiments.
Dark Energy Wave: Evangeline is attempting to consolidate power in the U.K. and London, where she keeps her residence. Ginman will not allow it, nor Lochness. Ultimately, her own plans for expansion are thwarted by the disorganization of her own ranks in the Array. Most of the powerful beings in the Array of Evil are busy trying to put the cart before the horse and crusade down to Atlantis and Egypt to stop Evolucia and Bill Ides. Evangeline stays the course and focuses on her brainwashing of the British public. She peddles a drug called XHT... batches can be a placebo given her own powers, but, old habits die hard and she doesn't like to mix business with pleasure. She tries to deny that it is her power to control media that is allowing her control of people's minds.
Dark Energy Wave: Bast is a cosmic being and she does tell stories of The Forum. It appears that she has lived for longer than anyone cares to keep track of. Apparently, the Gods and Goddesses will on occasion erase sections of their memory in order to keep their infinite experience entertaining and purposeful. In addition, some of their cosmic creations are simply shut off from consciousness for long periods, like a deep sleep, in order to keep them eager for experience. Bast is far from humble. She is an antagonist and acts in order to create fear and respect. It seems that the dark energy surge and the transformations is in order to test personalities and create individuals who are worthy of an extended, free existence. Otherwise, there is no freedom after physical life and all personalities are subject to the will and whims of The Forum. Potentially, most people could simply be put on the shelf indefinitely, instead of getting either Heaven or Hell. Bast is mentioned by Sassy and referred to by her when explaining the cosmic plans
