Brutal Playlist: The Best of Dethklok
Top 10 Metalocalypse Episodes List...
It is a shame that Metalocalypse has so few seasons because it is surely one of the best animated adult comedy shows of all time. The structure and dynamic of the fictional heavy metal band, Dethklok, is actually very similar to that of the main crew in South Park. Front man, Nathan Explosion has the raven hair to match Stan Marsh while both are the "coolest" of their crew and the unofficial leaders. If you were to have a hard time impressing anyone in either crew, it would be Stan and Nathan. Pickles the Drummer is like a co-leader in the band and most of the big decisions are made by Pickles and Nathan which is very similar to the relationship of Stan and Kyle Broflovski in South Park. In addition both Pickles and Kyle have red hair and a younger brother. Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Kenny McCormick are both blonde-haired and are the uncontrollably horny, womanizers of their crew. William Murderface is the ludicrous and disgusting member of Dethklok and his antics are pretty similar to that of Eric Cartman. Both have brown hair and no father. Finally, Toki Wartooth and Leopold "Butters" Stotch are both the naive wienies of their crews. Although, Toki is in the best shape of the band, he is a pushover much like Butters. Both go off and do their fanciful imaginary world adventures on the side and neither get the full respect of their crews. So, I hope that I have shown the similarities effectively and if you know both shows you would likely agree with me about the strong connections between the casts of the shows. I love South Park and Metalocalypse even though they are quite different. The dynamic of the band is well-balanced and their antics are pretty hilarious. Everything in the narrative hinges on the premise that Dethklok is the most popular band in the world and worth more than most nations. They have the ability to remain immaculate, yet still muck themselves up like one would expect from a brutal, hardcore heavy metal band. This list is my top ten selections for best Metalocalypse episodes. They are in chronological order.
10. S01E05 - DethKomedy
When the band figures that they need a creative spark, they decide to indulge their repressed lighter side through embracing comedy. They each devise a stand-up comedy act and start performing at comedy clubs. Pickles bombs and is heckled into a catatonic state, while Murderface learns that real comedy comes from mocking and humiliating one's audience. Nathan adopts several hilarious gags, including the ventriloquist puppet, Bodybag, and the disgusting gross-out prop, Kuato.
9. S01E11 - SkwisKlok
There are great guitar solos in this episode that focuses on Skwisgaar. Skwisgaar decides that he owes it to the world to perform a perfect master class in guitar skills. He is anxious about the live performance show and go to lengths to preserve the health of his hands. The fastidiousness leads to a fiasco and in the end Skwisgaar's hands are affected by his allergy to cilantro. Meanwhile, the other band members have decided to sponsor absurd products and run promotional advertisements during Skwisgaar's show.
8. S01E12 - Murdering Outside the Box
The cabal that has been insidiously plotting against Dethklok, decides to accelerate their plans by sending in an assassin to wipe out the band. The assassin inevitably fails, but in the meantime the band is interviewing their crony, Klokateers, to make sure that the henchmen are happy with general arrangements. Although it is officially a performance review, the band panders to their workers convivially. In the end, there is an award show in honour of the Klokateers and this is where the assassin meets his end amusingly.
7. S02E10 - DethGov
When the Governor of Florida makes a public appeal for citizens to stop worshiping Dethklok, Nathan Explosion condemns the politician. This leads to the governor being lynched and executed heinously. Dethklok shows up in Florida and assumes the governorship. They proceed to run the state into the ground financially, leading to martial law and general chaos. The situation is brutal but the band seems fairly oblivious to the gravity of the situation - making their antics that much funnier.
6. S03E02 - TributeKlok
When Dethklok are deemed pompous assholes by their own die-hard fans, they decide to get back to their roots. The first mandate is to re-license tribute bands which leads to the discovery that Toki has been a member of a Dethklok tribute band. Dethklok assumes the roles of that tribute band and start to play small venues in their humble attempt to appreciate their craft and their fans. Their ignorance of the process is hilarious as the juxtaposition of bourgeois values and heavy metal music is completely absurd.
5. S03E03 - DethHealth
The band goes for their annual health check-up and through a mishap, Pickles is told that he is dying. This leads to him spiraling into a drug and alcohol binge. Meanwhile, Murderface is having his own variety of warped guilt and accompanying hallucinations as he tries to understand whether is is homosexual or not.
4. S03E06 - FertilityKlok
This episode is focused on Toki who decides that he needs to go on a romantic quest in search of a soulmate. Toki visits an oppressive matchmaking service that pairs him with a hideous freak. Toki has to battle against the aggressive woman to free himself from his commitment to her. Meanwhile, Skwisgaar and Murderface end up in a ludicrous contest to see who can sleep with the most women. It doesn't end well for Murderface.
3. S03E08 - RehabKlok
This episode focuses on Pickles and has a lot of great songs. Pickles is given a fandangled new flying drum kit. When the kit flies out of control, the damage caused is in the millions of dollars. The band determines that Pickles was drunk (but isn't he always?) and forces him into rehab. Meanwhile, they replace Pickles with a robot drum machine. The drum machine absurdly starts living the traditional rock star lifestyle, getting high before shows and wasting time with floozies. Pickles has to battle to get out of rehab and assume his role in the band once more.
2. S04E02 - DiversityKlok
Toki feels alienated from the band and decides to create his own elite group which eventually is designed to simply ostracize Murderface. Meanwhile, the band has to contend with the media's accusations that they are racist. They decide to put on a concert to prove that they are progressively liberal minded people, but the whole thing backfires as miscommunication leads to a complete fiasco.
1. S04E08 - DethVanity
Murderface is given an award for ugliest rockstar which leads to him becoming insecure and in search of gifted plastic surgeons. Meanwhile, after the surgery, his boasting about being handsome leads the rest of the band to a situation where they must scramble to improve their own appearances. In the end, Murderface discovers that his boasting was for naught as the plastic surgeon had no idea what the hell he was doing when Murderface was under the knife.
